My camera was a novelty, and often as I wandered the streets of Herat, people would ask me to take their pictures. As few spoke English other than those who dealt regularly with travellers, and my Farsi was limited to a few phrases, we mostly communicated with sign language. Still, I found people friendly, and more open to outsiders than in neighbouring Iran.
