My camera was a novelty, and often as I wandered the
streets of Herat, people would ask me to take their
pictures. As few spoke English other than those who dealt
regularly with travellers, and my Farsi was limited to a
few phrases, we mostly communicated with sign language.
Still, I found people friendly, and more open to
