Early morning was a magic time in Kathmandu, Nepal.
People walked in from the semi-rural surrounding areas to
markets just off the central Durbar Square. I typically
resided on "Pig Street" just below the spot
where this picture was taken. Named for the many pigs
that lived in the street, it was also home to some of
Kathmandu's cheapest accommodation. An acceptable, though
spartan room, usually with a bed, could be had for three
rupees -- about 30 cents a night, including cold shower
on the roof. © 1977, 1999 Richard McGuire
