Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India,
has a Muslim majority, but is not without a significant
Hindu minority. Its Himalayan mountains contain a number
of sites of Hindu pilgrimage, including this temple near
Srinagar, the capital. To the left of this holy man is
Ganesha, a pot-bellied elephant god popular in Hindu
tradition. Kashmir has been a sore issue in
India-Pakistan relations, and parts of the state have
also been occupied by China. © 1977, 1999 Richard McGuire
