In the end, I solved both problems by extending my tripod like a long pole, and running it out over the edge while I lay a couple feet back from the edge holding it. I took five bracked exposures using a cable release, and combined them in Photomatix. The usual view was obscured by a thick fog that hung in the valley below, but it provided an atmospheric mood under the rising sun for long enough for me to take a few shots before the fog rose to obscure everything.
