Alberta Legislature

As Alberta's capital, Edmonton hosts the province's impressive Legislature Building. Such architecture is rare in Alberta, where most building is new and where tragically there has been a tendency to demolish what few historic buildings remain. The Legislature and Edmonton's Hotel Macdonald are two classic buildings that have avoided the wrecking ball. Though officially a democracy, Alberta has always tended toward an unofficial one-party system with the dominant party changing every few decades. Since the 1970s, the Progressive Conservatives had held most seats, and at times opposition members have numbered as few as two.
