Although indigenous peoples make up the majority in
the Mexican state of Chiapas, they have been subjected
for centuries to cruel domination and humiliation by more
powerful Mestizos. The highland city of San Cristóbal de
las Casas, where this picture was taken, was named for a
16th-century Spanish bishop who protested the cruelty
against indigenous peoples. Ironically, centuries later,
in 1994, another Mestizo, calling himself
"Subcommandante Marcos" led a
"Zapatista" uprising against this continued
exploitation. © 1990, 1999 Richard McGuire
