When we arrived in Chiapas in February
1990, we stumbled upon a celebration of indigenous
culture in the main square of San Cristóbal de las
Casas. The event brought performers from other regions of
Mexico, but indigenous culture is especially rich in
Chiapas where many still speak Mayan languages. In fact,
Chiapas has more in common with its neighbour, Guatemala,
of which it was once part, than with the Mestizo culture
of other parts of Mexico. © 1990, 1999 Richard McGuire
