The "Zócalo" or central square is a major
focus of most Latin American cities. "Zócalo"
is a Mexican word, and other countries have different
terms such as "plaza mayor." Still, it is where
all life meets, especially on a Sunday after mass, when
people stroll around in their best clothing. The Zócalo
in Oaxaca, shown here, is much smaller than the huge one
in Mexico City, but it's one of the more interesting
ones. A shoe shine stand provides a great place to people
watch, read a paper, or just relax. © 1990, 1999 Richard McGuire
