Fruit market, Saquisilí, EcuadorDigital Photo by Richard McGuire Because Ecuador has so many different elevations, it has a huge number of micro climates producing different fruit from tropical to temperate. In the fruit market at Saquisilí, apples are sold alongside pineapples -- and bananas, pears, grapes, papayas, tree tomatoes, lemons, granadillas, mangos, naranjillas, and zapotes -- and all kinds of other fruit that is seldom seen outside the tropics. All of it grown locally.
