Prickly pear cactus, Point Pelee, southern Ontario

Point Pelee is the southern tip of mainland Canada, extending southward into Lake Erie. Below 42 degrees latitude, Point Pelee is as far south as northern California, and at roughly similar latitudes to Barcelona, Roma and Istanbul in Europe. The southern latitude and moderating effect of shallow Lake Erie cause vegetation to grow here that is unusual in Canada.
