Young Timber Wolf, Trans-Labrador Highway (east of Churchill Falls)

Digital Photo by Richard McGuire

It's now possible to drive from Baie Comeau, Québec to Goose Bay, Labrador, a distance of 1,100 km (685 miles) -- much of the way through wilderness. On a rainy day driving along the gravel road east of Churchill Falls, I spotted this young wolf at the side of the road. I backed up my car and watched him quietly through my telephoto lens. Instead of running, he cautiously approached me until we were only about 15 feet apart. I remained in my car, and we just watched each other, as I snapped photos for close to five minutes. This only ended when I saw a truck barreling down the road towards us, and I honked to warn the wolf to get off the road. He darted off into the bush.
